Your Keratoconus specialist in Long Island, NY.

If you’re struggling to achieve comfortable and clear vision with eyeglasses and traditional contact lenses, then you may have hard-to-fit eyes or a corneal irregularity.

Corneal conditions like keratoconus lead to an irregularly-shaped cornea, which causes visual impairment that makes it challenging to go about your daily routine.

Fortunately, scleral lenses offer a stable and comfortable fit for patients with keratoconus and other corneal irregularities. At Diamond Vision in Long Island, we’re eager to help you find an ideal fit for your eyes with scleral lenses.

Keratoconus: Causes, & Symptoms

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition that results in the cornea thinning and bulging into a conical shape. The exact cause of this eye condition is unknown, but many eye experts suggest that genetics and environmental factors may play a role. Other corneal irregularities may be caused by disease, trauma, or surgery.

Common symptoms of keratoconus include distorted vision, light sensitivity, and trouble with night vision. This condition becomes more and more challenging to correct with glasses or traditional contact lenses as it progresses.

How Scleral Lenses Correct Keratoconus

Scleral lenses are an innovative treatment option for patients with keratoconus and other corneal irregularities. They’re larger than regular contacts and rest on the whites of the eye (the sclera), which allows them to arch over the sensitive cornea, not coming in direct contact with it.

This creates a space between the cornea and the lens which is filled with a saline that creates a new optical surface, resulting in clear vision and a comfortable fit.

Moreover, sclera lenses are ideal for patients with keratoconus because they reduce corneal irritation that can occur during blinking. In many cases, patients are able to avoid corneal transplant surgery due to sclera lenses.
