What Our Patients Are Saying

Understanding Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition that affects the cornea, which is the clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye. In a healthy eye, the cornea is smooth and round, helping to focus light properly onto the retina. In keratoconus, the cornea gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone-like shape, causing light to be distorted as it enters the eye.

How Scleral Lenses Correct Keratoconus

Scleral lenses are an innovative treatment option for patients with keratoconus and other corneal irregularities. They’re larger than regular contacts and rest on the whites of the eye (called the sclera), allowing them to arch over the sensitive cornea without coming in direct contact with it.

This creates a space between the cornea and the lens, which is filled with a saline solution that creates a new optical surface, resulting in clear vision and a comfortable fit.

Moreover, sclera lenses are ideal for patients with keratoconus because they reduce corneal irritation that can occur during blinking. In many cases, patients are able to avoid corneal transplant surgery due to scleral lenses.

Why Choose Diamond Vision for Scleral Lenses?

The optometric team at Diamond Vision has extensive experience and expertise in complex contact lens fittings. We have a proven track record of helping hard-to-fit patients with keratoconus and other corneal irregularities achieve enhanced vision and comfort with scleral lenses.

Dr. Galan has over 20 years of experience fitting patients who are unable to experience clear vision with traditional soft contact lenses, making him one of the leading keratoconus eye doctors in Long Island. He takes a personalized approach to every patient fitting, so each pair of lenses is tailored to the individual’s unique vision needs.

In Dr. Galan’s words, he has fitted “hundreds and hundreds of patients over the years.”
